Note: There will be no Second Round for the Social Sciences Program and the Japan-in-Asia Cultural Studies Program.

Wherever you live, you can simply apply through the Nagoya University Online Admissions System. We employ a comprehensive selection approach and the admission consists of two parts: paper-screening and interview. There will be no paper examination during screening; thus your academic background will be evaluated based on your school records, as well as standardized tests while we also take your non-academic activities such as extra-curricular activities or volunteer works into consideration.
Based on the application documents submitted, short-listed applicants will be invited for the next screening, an interview, which will be conducted face-to-face at our university or via Skype if you reside outside of Japan.
The admissions results will be announced on the online admissions system and you will also receive an email of your application status change.

 

1.Eligibility to Apply
Please confirm your eligibility by reading the admission requirements carefully before starting your application. If you are not sure about your eligibility, please send an inquiry to the Admissions Office a month before the first day of the application round for which you are applying.

2. Apply Online by Online Admissions System
After creating your account, you will be asked to input your personal information and academic background on the online admissions system. You also need to upload soft copies of most of the supporting documents into the system in order to complete the online application. However, you still need to submit originals or certified true hard copies for some required documents if you pass the primary screening. Please see the list of supporting documents below for details. The admissions system also facilitates submission of references by your teachers if they prefer to send their reference letters electronically.

Your application can be complete and be evaluated for the primary screening without submitting us the original documents. However, we still require the documents with * to be original or certified true hard copy if you pass the primary screening. If you submit only soft copies at the time of application, please send the original or certified true hard copies by the following deadline:

Note:
1. All application documents submitted cannot be returned under any circumstances. Thus, if the original document can be issued only once, please submit a certified true copy. The certified true copy can be issued by your school, the Japanese embassy or a notary office. For more information about the supporting documents, please click here for the admission requirements.
2. Applicants who do not submit the originals by the designated deadline will be excluded from the secondary screening stage (interview).

High/Secondary School Graduation Diploma (required)*
Upload a soft copy of the certificate of graduation (or prospective graduation) on the online admissions system. An original or certified true hard copy of the documents which bear an official seal or signature of the school must be submitted by post if you passed the primary screening. Prospective graduation could be any document or letter issued by your school, which indicates the expected date of your graduation.
Academic Transcript (required)*
Academic transcripts must include grades from the last 2 or more years of high school.
Upload a soft copy of your official high school transcript on the online admissions system. An original or certified true hard copy of the documents which bear an official seal or signature of the school must be submitted by post if you passed the primary screening.
Standardized Test Scores (if applicable)*
Submit scores from a standardized examination or a national examination. Official scores should be sent to the Admissions Office, directly by the testing institution.

Guidelines for Country Specific Required Documents



Note: For applicants who have not graduated from their high schools at the time of application, we expect them to submit the latest academic records/results, predicted scores or forecast of final results with their application.
English Language Proficiency Test Score (if applicable)*
Please submit scores/proof of the English proficiency requirement. Official scores should be sent directly from the testing institution by the deadline.

In case the official score report does not arrive our office by the deadline, please upload a soft copy of your score report or screenshot on the online admission system.
Two Essays (required)
Upload the two required essays on the online admissions system. Essay questions can be found on the last page of the admission requirements. Each essay should be in Word format. Essay no 1 would be about 200 to 300 words while essay no 2 would be 400 to 500 words long in English.
Two Reference Letters (required)
Submit two reference letters. Letters need to be sent directly by your referees either through the online admissions system or by post. Please follow the instruction on the online admission system. If your referees prefer to submit the evaluation by post, you need to fulfill the part for applicants first and pass it to the referees.
One reference must come from a teacher (Referee A) in the field (subject area) the applicant wishes to major in, and the other reference must come from a teacher or counselor (Referee B) who is able to evaluate applicant’s character.
Referees need to be employed at an accredited education institute where the applicant has been or is currently enrolled.
Copy of Passport/Government Issued ID card (required)

Nagoya University Global 30 Scholarship Application and
Income Statement (if applicable)
When you submit your application for the G30 International Programs, you will automatically be considered as an applicant for the G30 Scholarship. Please upload both a scholarship application form and an income statement of your financial supporter on the online admissions system. The income statement should cover the annual income and be translated into English. If you have decided not to be considered for the G30 Scholarship, it is not required to submit it.

Step 3. Pay Application Fee
Once you complete your online application, you are required to pay a non-refundable application fee (5,000 JPY) via the online admission system using Paypal. If you have any problems in paying the fee through Paypal, you can choose to pay through a bank transfer, but please note that it takes longer to confirm your payment and issue the application number. After you complete your payment, an application number will be given to you and you can check your application status by logging into the Online Admissions System.
Please note that you will be considered an applicant only after the application fee is paid. Upon confirmation of your payment, the Admissions Office will check your application documents and contact you regarding missing documents through the online admission system.
 
Step 4. Keep Checking on Your Application Status
After you complete your online application, the admission office starts to check the documents that you submit both through the system and via post, and informs you of missing documents in order to help you complete the application by the deadline.
The message function can also be used on the online admissions system, which makes it easier for us to communicate with you regarding your application documents. 
In addition, the primary and final screening results will be announced on the system on the date specified on the admission requirements so please make sure to check the results as soon as possible. Especially when we announce the primary screening result,  interview details will be shown on your page including the date and the interview method and you can just reply to our invitation through the system. The interview will take about 45 minutes for Engineering and Science programs and about 30 minutes for Social Sciences and Japan -in-Asia Cultural Studies program. As it is important for us to receive your response, please keep checking your page even after you complete the online application.

Tuition and Living Expenses

Nagoya University serves as a cradle for future leaders in different area. With the support of the government, NU provides various kinds of resources for students while setting the tuition fee and other expenses at a very affordable level, so as to make sure the bright talents will be placed in the best environment for developing their future.

Tuition and Other fees

As a national university, Nagoya University is heavily funded by the government. Tuition fee, regardless the nationality of students, is JPY535,800 per academic year – 3 to 4 times less expensive than at comparable institutions in many other countries, and this is same as the one for local Japanese students. Although some areas of Japan have been noted for their high cost of living, Nagoya benefits from the rich natural resources of the neighboring area and remains a comfortable and affordable place to live.

Visa Application (Only for Non-Japanese Nationals/Non-Japanese Permanent Residents)

International students are required to apply to the nearest Japanese diplomatic missions (embassy or consulate) for a College Students visa, which is usually issued after the embassy / consulate obtains the students’"Certificate of Eligibility for Status of Residence". To apply for "Certificate of Eligibility", students are asked to submit two ID photos, a copy of their passport, and a bank statement which verifies that their financial supporter has funds equivalent to JPY 1,000,000 or more. The bank account may be held in the name of students or their financial supporter. Students who receive Nagoya University Global 30 Undergraduate Scholarship also need to submit a bank statement which verifies that their financial supporter has the funds equivalent to JPY500,000 or more. The detailed information will be sent to the admitted students.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

Scholarships

With the generous support from our government, donors and corporate partners, there are several scholarship opportunities available in Nagoya University. To recognize the outstanding achievement of the students and support those who have financial needs, most scholarships are awarded on the strength of academic merit, financial needs and some also on other non-academic achievements. The following admission scholarships are available especially for the students of the international programs;

Financial Aid

Apart from the scholarships, Nagoya University waives tuition fee for the students who have financial difficulties under certain conditions. During the orientation for the new students of the international programs, the application process and conditions would be explained.

 

Nagoya University Global 30 Undergraduate Scholarship

Eligibility to apply:

Applicants must satisfy all the requirements below to be eligible to apply for the scholarship:

  • Applicants must satisfy Nagoya University’s undergraduate admissions eligibility criteria for the Global 30 International Programs.
  • Applicants must submit a completed undergraduate admissions application package with the Scholarship Application Form by the respective application deadlines.
The Scholarship includes
Tuition The tuition will be fully-covered for 4 years.
Registration fee The scholarship recipient also needs to pay this fee, but it will be reimbursed in form of monthly installment within the first year.
Annual Stipend The total of JPY500,000 will be provided every year for personal expenses for 4 years.

*Application fee will not be covered by the scholarship. Therefore, all applicants need to pay the application fee by the respective deadline.

Eligibility to receive scholarship:

Applicants must satisfy both requirements below to receive the scholarship:

  • Selected recipients must matriculate at Nagoya University in the year applied, with the intention of completing the program at Nagoya University.
  • If a recipient receives additional scholarship from other governmental and/or private sources equivalent to or greater than JPY500,000 per year, s/he will forfeit this scholarship.
Duration of Scholarship:

In principle, the scholarship will cover the four years of the recipient’s undergraduate study at Nagoya University. However, continuation each year will be contingent on the recipient maintaining the "Responsibilities" –as stipulated below. Scholarships can be terminated at any time if it is found that the "Responsibilities" are not being met or the recipient has not abided by the rules and regulations of Nagoya University and Japan.

Responsibilities of the Recipients:

1) Must maintain good academic standing.
2) Is committed to being an ethical leader and role model on campus and the general community.
3) Will represent Nagoya University as a "student ambassador".

Selection:

Academic and non-academic criteria and extra-curricular activities will be evaluated together with financial need.
